Malignant Lymphomas: Carcinomas of lymphoid tissues

lymphomas
Malignant lymphomas are malignant cells or cancer cells arising in the lymphoid tissues. These tissues include lymph nodes, B-cells, T-cells, NK cells, etc.
Usually most of the lymphomas are highly malignant and lethal if not controlled at early stage and treated with proper medicine. Malignant lymphomas are common in china, occupying about 3-4% of all malignant cancer cases. Malignant lymphomas are more common in developed counties compare to developing countries. Especially USA and European countries.

Malignant lymphomas result due to monoclonal proliferation of B cells and T cells, which are blocked at certain stage during maturing. Thus, the neoplastic cells shall mimic their identical normal B or T cells in the aspect of morphology, genotype, and imunophenotype. These features help in diagnosing various types of malignant lymphomas.

Previously, malignant lymphomas have been categorized into major two types. There are: Hodgkin’s lymphoma (HL) and Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Malignant lymphomas are divided into two types based on their distinctive histology and different pattern of behaviors. Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma is most common in middle aged or elderly people. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma can occur in lymph nodes and other organs that contain lymph tissues. The cancerous lymph nodes have a particular sort of malignant lymphocyte, which is known as a Reed-Sternberg cell. According to American institute for cancer research, 80-85% of Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma are of B-cell origin, and the remaining is derived from T-cells.

Many studies have suggested that virus is a risk factor of certain malignant lymphomas. Recent studies have revealed that Epstein-Bar virus (EBV) plays a major role in causing Hodgkin’s lymphoma.  Individuals infected with the HIV virus have a higher chance of developing non-Hodgkin's lymphomas.

People who have exposed to certain pesticides and ionizing radiation are at risk of developing malignant lymphomas. People who have suppressed immunity due taking long term immuno-suppressants like steroids and anti-cancer drugs etc., have a higher chance of developing malignant lymphomas.
