Liver cancer: Correlated with alcohol abuse and hepatitis

liver cancer
Liver cancer or hepatic carcinoma is a growth of cancer cells in the liver. They are mainly derived from hepatocytes (liver cells) but small portion of the liver cancer cells are from bile duct origin. The incident pattern of liver cancer varies different in various parts of the world, more common in Africa than other regions. Usually common among middle aged people and male are affected more than female.

Gastric Carcinoma: The second most common fatal malignancy  in the world

Liver cancer: pathological changes of liver

Liver cancer gross type

  • Early carcinoma of liver: it is a condition in which there is only one cancer nodule in the liver with diameter of 3cm but rarely there may be 2 cancer nodules with diameter of 3cm approximately
  • Moderate stage: liver can be divided into three grossly types and most of them are with cirrhosis
  • Big mass type: tumor is usually seen as a spherical solid mass that is usually larger than 15 cm in diameter.
  • Multiple nodular type: the most common type of liver cancer usually arising from cirrhotic liver. Multiple nodules can be found in the liver.
  • Diffuse types: this type of liver cancer is characterized by diffusely distributed cancer tissues in the liver without cancer nodules formed

Liver cancer signs and symptoms

  • Liver cirrhosis
  • Enlarged abdominal mass
  • Pain in the right upper quadrant
  • Weight loss
  • Jaundice
  • Ascites (fluid accumulation in peritoneal cavity)

Live cancer causes

  • Viral hepatitis: hepatitis B appears to be the most important causes related to liver cancer worldwide followed by hepatitis C
  • Liver cirrhosis: evidences have shown that different types of liver cirrhosis are related to liver cancer
  • Fungi and mycotoxins: some fungi such as Aspergillus flavus, Aspergiluas versicolor, have induced liver cancer in animal experimental, consumption of Aflatoxins (mycotoxin) contaminated food has shown liver cancer experimentally.
  • Carcinogens: Such as dimethylnitrosamine.
  • Genetic: mutation of gene TP53
  • Alcohol abuse

Liver cancer metastasis

Metastasize within the liver and via lymphatic route spread to lymph nodes in upper abdomen and retroperitoneal region. At later stage metastasize to lung, brain and bones.
