A normal gene usually encoding regulatory protein for regulating cell growth and differentiation, that becomes an oncogene (cancer causing gene) due to mutation or increased expression.  Proto –oncogene regulates uncontrolled cell growth that may become a cancerous tumor and it maintains normal cell growth and division.
